Symbology of Squares

Another exploration of a symbol often found in Kristi's art work recently - squares. What do they mean? Why is is drawn to them?

This page contains a smattering of square-heavy art created in the last year and 2 months. It seems a lot of my stuff is either square itself or contains squares. I did a little exploration as to why. I'm not sure I've hit the nail on the head just yet, though there were many things that struck me. I think it's highly geometric nature appeals to my scientific background side as does the amazing symmetry - horizontal, vertically and diagonally! I also heard once that square is one of the hardest shapes to create successful compositions in so I think I like that challenge. I also like how it contrast with some many other elements often used - circles, stripes, rectangles, triangles, stars, spirals, hearts and anything organic etc. Lastly, I think I like how you can take a very stable element and make it very dynamic by defying the natural order of it - scatter the squares and keep from lining them up like a checkerboard, or make an incomplete checkerboard to raise suspence.
