A Sad Something in May…

Filed under: Photography, Fitness — Kristi at 1:48 pm on Friday, May 4, 2012

Walking through the garden on my way into work this morning something a little white on one of the rocks tucked beneath a tree/shrub caught my eye. Upon further inspection I was saddened to realize it was an abandoned and broken egg. I saw no signs of a nest nearby so I expect its mates probably suffered a similar fate, falling prey to some predator or another.

In something a bit more amusing, Kathryn posted some of photos taken at her alpaca shearing last weekend with her camera, mostly by our friend Dee (I’ve not yet gotten the photos I shot for her all processed, though there are a few winners amongs the 840 shots). At the top of her post is a somewhat funny picture of me if you’ve been wondering what I look like these days. I will say if I did not remember the photo being taken I would not have known that was me in that picture - with three layers of clothing and a large sweatshirt tied around my wasit, LOL! That is in no way as flattering of a shot as it could have been. I now understand why sometimes I’m struck with the thought “That is not my [insert random body part of your choosing]?!? Is it?”

I look nothing the way I think I do in a mirror in a photograph usually. This probably spells out some major disconnect but I think it’s more that I know exactly where the flattering angles are.

Aw, sad about the egg. I found a baby bluejay a couple of years ago that made me sad. We have generations in our backyard. I think it’s Great-great grandpa bluejay that used to wander through the pine chips shrieking about how his house was demolished without warning. (Pine beetles. He and I were as one on the subject.)

I watched a robin build a nest in the maple not far outside my kitchen window and then saw her sitting in her new nest for awhile, periodically chasing off other birds or hollering (or just crouching down and glaring) at me when I dared walk out my door, too close to her tree. I was enjoying her being up there and was looking forward to some babies’ chirping. Sadly, there was a different type of activity last week… a raven raided her nest. She came back and spent time cleaning up the nest and I wasn’t sure if she’d lay more eggs, but I haven’t seen her back since. :-( Sometimes, nature sucks.

Birds will often take a damaged or bad egg…(and even the shells of their hatched eggs..) far from the nest to dispose of them. The reason they do this is so not to attract predators to the nest.

Love that photo of yu with your camera! An artist at work ;-)
