Modeled Panda Cotton Socks in Progress

Despite the heat, the gardening, the canning and all the other craziness of summer stuff there has been a bit of knitting going on. I finally settled on a stitch pattern for the Panda Cotton toes I had done. The color combined with the stitch pattern had me thinking of a half of a ruby red grapefruit so I was thinking I’d call them ruby red, but the gals at SnB didn’t think it fit. Plus, I kind of hate to be married so closely to a specific color with the name. They thought it looked like a crystal structure. What does it look like to you?

Panda Cotton Socks There hasn’t been a ton of progress on this one. Partially because I’m knitting them two at a time. Partly because I still need to consult a chart and until we had printing working here I had to work out of my knitting journal which isn’t portable or TV watching friendly (not enough contrast).

I’m thinking I’m going to be trying out a new heel on these. I’m not yet sure what, but I’m feeling a bit in a rut on the heel front. I suspect the heel flap and gusset will always be near and dear to me. I have mixed it up and done some short row heels this summer, but I’m feeling like branching out :-) Do you have a favorite toe-up (or direction indifferent) heel?

Gorgeous! Hmm, I can see the crystal structure thing - any rock formations in Colorado that look like that? :) I do the same toe-up heel all the time - the Judy Gibson heel from the Generic pattern, but modified to use slip stitches.

Ruby Red is a perfect name! I think the stitch pattern is quite lovely.

I don’t see a particular thing - it just looks “Serpentine” to me. Love the texture, and that yarn shows it off perfectly!

It looks like “brain coral”… both the color and the pattern, so perhaps Coral would be a good name?

I think that it looks like frozen crystals . With the coral color ,what about coral crystals?

Whatever name you choose, they are beautiful socks.

The pattern reminds me of a formal garden with boxwood. Sock names are getting harder to find (unused anyway). I like Boxwood, but then, I like alot of names. The pattern is lovely, though. As for the heel, no ideas. I’m stuck on the slip stitch stand-by and it wears like iron. I have done a couple of plain stockinette, but I love my slip stitch heel.

These are absolutely gorgeous. I wish I was clever enough to use a fancy stitch for a pair of socks. As it is, I’m just happy to have my stockinette come out straight (!) I usually use a short row toe-up heel (because I am by nature impatient and these are the quickest) but I’m not always satisfied with them. I’ll be interested in what you choose to do.

The short-row, garter stitch heel over 60% of the foot stitches has worked well for me on two separate socks.
I normally let the yarn dictate the type of heel I use. If it’s a self-striping yarn I tend to go for a short row heel, but a variegated or solid lends itself more to a heel flap and gusset.

I’m not so good at names, but they remind me of roses growing up a lattice. And I am quite smitten with Wendy’s (of wendyknits, of course) gusseted toe-ups!

Crinkly! I like your texture. I saw a neat tutorial for heels on Criminy Jickets. I still like the top down heel gusset best - so I’m not much help here!

Hi, I came across your blog after doing a google search for Sweet Williams tea cookies. Alas, I am addicted to the key lime flavor after buying some on a whim from Publix. I was trying to find a web page for the company so that I might be able to order more or other flavors. Do you know if one exists? Where do you get your fix? Thanks!!

When I look at the pattern is see those round dreamcatcher wheels so how about Dreamcatcher Socks? I agree, no matter how lovely the color is I think it’s best not to have a “color” name like Ruby Red because as you know some people don’t really like to step outside the box and follow a pattern to the letter.

I use Priscilla Gibson-Roberts yo short row heel for toe ups. Sometimes I will increase a few stitches before starting the heel if the pattern is a snug one. I figured out how to reverse engineer my top down short row heel with the mini flap and gusset but it was just too fussy so I settle for increasing a bit if I need a bit more depth.

Thanks for the compliments on Bonita :)

I think they look like spires in the middle east. Very pretty no mater what you call them!

The only heel I ever use (unless there’s a structural or stitch pattern reason not to, like in a Cookie A. pattern) is Lucy Neatby’s Turkish afterthought heel, from the Cool Socks, Warm Feet book. Requires no conversion for top down/toe up and allows you to control the depth very easily so you get the fit you’re looking for.

Gorgeous socks, BTW.

I think Crystal Palace already has a sock called Crystaline Lattice, so maybe something more like Coral Lattice or Crystal Coral. Or something less lame than the 2 I came up with. Whatever you decide, it’s very lovely.

To me, it looks like Turkish/Arabic mosaics. You know, like Moorish architecture in Spain.

Kristi,

These are gorgeous socks! The texture is amazing - be sure to let us know when you finish the pattern and we’d love to show a photo in our Sock Index and link to your pattern or PDF Pattern offer.

We are getting a new Panda Silk (bamboo - machinewash wool - silk) yarn for next season and if you’d like to develop a pattern for it, we’d be happy to send 2 balls when the early samples arrive - just get in touch!

Your sock design collection is very impressive!
