Craft Supply Mysteries…

6/30/2004

Well, my 41-lb box from my visit home arrived last Thursday and I’ve finally gotten around to unpacking it. It wasn’t quite all knitting stuff, but a good majority of it was. I had put some of the heavier clothes I had brought home and some other books I was given from my cousin in there.

Anyway, when going through my grandma’s knitting and related “stuff” we came across a few oddities and some pleasant surprises. One odd thing was that she had only a single size 50 knitting needle, LOL! But there were also a couple items she no longer knew what they were for. So, I’m asking your assitance to help me identify these two objects…

Mystery Object #1
Mystery Object #1
The word carved into it appears to be “Lael” and it is on both sides.

Mystery Object #2 - Disassembled

Mystery Object #2 - Assembled
Mystery Object #2 - Assembled

I sort of have my guesses, but am not sure and would be ever so greatful if you posted about these things in your own blogs so I could get some answers!

New Knitting Milestone

Last night I hit a milestone in my knitting…

Opal sock with broken needle

I broke my first sock needle while trying to pick up the stitches on the side of the heel flap, LOL! It was a Brittany, but thanks to my recent trip and the kindness of my grandmother I can now easily switch to metal sz 1 needles…

Needle Aquisition

Stephanie, eat your heart out at all those great colors of needles! I’m not real big on using the metal needles, but now I have more than enough needles to spread the joy of knitting to my friends without thier needing to invest a bunch before they know if they like it or not! Whee!

I acquired many more things, but I think I’ve gotten picture heavy enough for one post so I’ll save the books and other fiber arts gadgets for another day…

  1. I don’t know what the first item is, but the 2nd one is a hairpin lace loom (very popular in the ’70s).

  3. Ditto for #2 - hairpin lace. I’d say #1 is a lucet for making braided cord; the lucets I’ve seen though have all been more of a Y shape.

  4. You often can find size 50 needles sold as a single needle only.

    The reason?

They are used for Broomstick Crochet.

  5. The first item is a very nice item used for tatting lace. It is
different from the usual ones. The others are right about item
    2 - a hairpin lace loom.
Also, contact the LYS where you got the Brittany needles or go online
to the company. Brittanys are guaranteed and they will replace
any which break. I stopped using them because they warp. I really
like bamboo better. It doesn’t warp or break. They do have rather
sharp points. My favorites are Bryspun, but they don’t come
in the smallest sizes and the points are a little different.
