Books, Zines
& Mags - Oh My!
Books
- AddAll
- this site price compares 30+ on-line booksellers, including the shipping
and handling and also lists availability given by the booksellers
- Amazon.com
- if I don't purchase a book locally, this is my most used on-line source
- Bookshelf
- this includes links to the art books on my shelves
- Boulder
Bookstore - this is one of my favorite independent booksellers in
the area
- Chronicle
Books - this is another publishing company that has several books
on my shelves
- Dover
Publications - this publisher reprints public domain art and books
- North
Light Books - again, a publisher frequently found on my shelves
- Sterling
Publishing - this the publichser of many of the art books on my
shelves
Zines
- AEZine
- this is a zine that is mostly black a white, but comes with a CD that
contains the artwork in color. It's full of off-beat, erractic art.
There is often nude images and bizarre insects, so be forewarned. I
am no longer subscribed to this one, but did enjoy the year that I got.
- Artitude
Zine - this is one of my favorite zines, with lots of info on ABs,
collage and general art. You get a free color collage sheet and they've
recently added some color gallery pages
- Dog
Eared Magazine - this is a zine full of altered book and
bookbinding information. I am not subscribed, but hope to do so soon.
- The
Gleaner - this zine is all about collage and even includes lots
of collage goodies. I'm also not subscribed to this one, but would like
to if the budget allows.
- Play
- this zine is edited by Teesha Moore (editor of the former Studio zine
and organizer of ArtFest) and is full of information about art journals.
I *really* want to subscribe to this one. I've heard patience is required
to order from them as they travel to conventions a lot and it may take
a several weeks before you get any response.
There are many, many other zines, but these are the ones I have subscribed
to or hope to subscribe to in the future. For additional listings of zines,
see Vickie
Enkoff's Zine Page.
Magazines
- Expression
Art Magazine - this is one of my favorite magazines that I'm subscribed
to. It contains a wide variety of projects that are not always rubber
stamp based. The pictures of projects are relatively simple and focused
on the art, not props.
- Legacy
- a quarterly publication by Stampington & Company (publishers of
Somerset Studio) that is dedicated to turning family stories into art.
It is not all vintage, but does tend towards that. Currently I've just
been picking this one up at the newstand.
- Oxford
American Magazine - this is a great Southern magazine with issues
focused on different areas of culture such as literature, music, films
and such. It was reputed to be dead, but is supposed to be back.
- ReadyMade
- I *love* this quirky, off-beat mag. It has tons of projects for giving
items a new or unusual use. It's kind of Gen X or Gen Y.
- Real
Simple - this is a newer publication that I have subscribed to almost
since it started. The focus was on simplifying things. It often contains
organization, cooking and fashion tips. I have just let my subscription
lapse as I was finding it to be less and less focused on the "simple"
part it started with.
- Rubberstampmadness
- this was the original rubberstamping magazines. It has been known
for quirky, off-beat cards and projects. Recently there has been some
complaints that the content is shrinking and the ads increasing. You'll
have to judge for yourself. I sometimes pick this one up at the newstand.
- Somerset
Studio - this is the original artsy stamping magazine. It has grown
to include some other paper arts, but stamps are frequently used in
their projects. It has been said that the colors and such have lost
any variety. Shots of cards and projects are often full of other items,
not leaving the art to speak for itself. I still subscribe to it though
as it still stimulates my creativity.
- Stamper's
Sampler - this is another publication by Stampington & Company.
It is strictly stamping projects and is somewhat similar to Somerset
Studio. I only pick this one up off the newstand if there is an article
or two that peaks my interest.
- Stamping
Arts & Crafts - this is one the I pick up occassionaly from
the newstand. The instructions are simple and to the point. All projects
use rubber stamps in some way.
- Sunset -
this is a reginal magazine for the western US that includes lots of
travel, gardening and cooking information. I have picked this one up
at the newstands, almost every month for the last year. I think I need
to subscribe, LOL!
