Our Own Lemon Tree - Yes, in Colorado!

Lemon Blossom

About a month ago DH and I took advantage of a sale at one of the local nurseries and purchased an Improved Meyer Lemon tree. We’ve harvested about 5 lemons from it, with two more about ready to be picked. About ten days ago or so it flowered. The smell was soooo sweet! The livinging room smelt like a pixie stick.

Today, the tree looks very sad. Okay, not very sad. I get very sad when I look at the floor around the tree. It is dropping leaves like crazy. It doesn’t seem appreciatively less leafy, but I can’t help but worry.

It seemed just before it flowered to have aphids. At least I think that was the case. There were shiny speckles in places and light colored tiny little bugs concentrated mostly near the buds. I’ve sprayed twice now with Neem II, an organic pest control. But it seems worse.

Anyone have experience growing meyer lemons indoors in the winter? Shall I continue with the regular spraying schedule recommended on the Neem II bottle? Is it not the pest that is causing the leaf drop but over or under watering? Help! It has been in our home such a short time (especially for the amount of money even if it was on sale). I don’t want to loose it.

Meet Sherrie, Laura and Mary Ann (and their Mitered Diamond Bags)

The Three Ladies and Their Bags

A couple weeks ago a class on the Mitered Diamond Bag from the Felt special issue of Interweave was complete. Of course everyone still needed to felt their bag after the class was over. We decided an extra “class” for sharing and photo taking (and a yummy lunch) was in order for the future. So, last week we all got together and had some laughs photographing everyone’s colorful Mitered Diamond Bags and then went out to lunch.

The Three FOs

All three gals chose to use Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Worsted and they turned out very similar in size and just a tad thicker than the original which was knit in Cascade 220. Everyone really mixed up the colors from the original too, all using more than four. I *love* seeing everyone take their own spin in colors and yarn - especially on a project like this that is so wide open for variations. They even used Grayson E purse handles like I put on my Decarhombi.

The Class FOs

Laura ventured farther out on a limb by carrying along some handpaint Wildefoot sock yarn (with nylon content) in some of her diamonds. I was a little concerned about it changing the size of those diamonds so she placed things such that it would do so evenly. But it really didn’t impact the felting. Now she is doing a grayscale version with some fun novelty yarn in just a few of the diamonds.

Hopefully I can report back on her second bag and also show you what size you get when using bulky yarn! Another gal who couldn’t make it to the class is using a different color of Lamb’s Pride Bulky for each square!

Shaun the Sheep Cookie

Last week was an awful week for me. The issues that made it bad are still not resolved, but I’m on a much more even keel this week. The bright spot in last weeks crappiness? An unexpected ringing of the doorbell and our mail lady there holding a box sent airmail. It was a surprise package from Mrs Pao!

Mailbox Surprise from Mrs Pao She sent some much needed chocolates and the cookie at the top of the post. There was also some coffee grounds (which I brewed a pot of this past weekend and was very good), a mystery book involving tea that I’m looking forward to getting to read, a book of traditional tea time bread recipes, and some Violet Green sock yarn. I keep picking up and reading the bread recipe book and drooling. I love that it gives you the history of the recipes for things like baps, plum bread, and many, many others. I’m looking forward to having the energy to try them out soon.

VIolet Green Stellar Sock Yarn RainforestLook at that sock yarn? Greens of every hue! I’m so excited. Having moved to Colorado from wetter and colder climes 9.5 years ago my biggest struggle with living here (other than being so far removed from my family) is the lack of green. This yarn will brighten my winter knitting after the holidays and allow me to dream of those few short weeks in the spring when we are green here. And, I can eat baps and hot crossed buns while knitting on it ;-)

Thanks so much Mrs Pao (and Pao), your timing couldn’t have been better!

Tools

Busy, busy, busy with nothing I can talk about really. Man that makes blogging difficult!

I’ve been unable to upgrade my WordPress installation without breaking the whole thing for over a year. While it doesn’t feel like I have time to track down why I am unable to do so, it is a good time because I’m not posting much.

In the next week (or three) it is likely you may find the blog broken completely or looking odd. Please pardon the dust as things get upgraded and working properly again. In the meantime if you are a Raveler, all my patterns will remain available with no wonkiness in my Ravelry store.
