A Spinning Meme…

Filed under: Moi, Spinning, Dyeing, Lemming — Kristi at 8:19 am on Wednesday, May 16, 2007

I found it very beneficial to go through the list for the knitting meme yesterday and see what I have done, what I haven’t done and what I had maybe forgotten that I wanted to try. A lot of my knitting is focused on socks so it makes sense that my spinning is focused on getting to my preferred sock knitting weight, but there are so many other areas of spinning to explore. I decided a meme on spinning would be beneficial to look at as well.

The directions are the same as those book memes and the more recent knitting one. Bold those things you have done, italicize those you wish to do, and leave plain the ones that are of no interest to you.

Again, not shabby since I’m just shy of owning my wheel for two years. I think the biggest area of exploration open to me is exploring other fiber types. Because I did take a class I was exposed to a fair number of wools and natural plant fibers as well as equipment that I don’t own myself. I could really use exploring the more exotic fibers though, though cost has been part of the reason I haven’t explored them. I do have a few blends in the stash that contain some of them though. I’m also really anxious to do some blending - fiber types as well as colors.

How about you? What have you done? What are you anxious to try?

Well, I just got my first wheel at CT S&W. Let’s just say I have done…ummm. Well, I’ve spun a hairball, then I spun some mystery roving and managed to ply it. 4 oz. of BFL into some presentable thick/thin but it’s only about 72 yds. plied. Hm. My triumph yesterday was that I managed to turn 4 oz. of a wool blend into about 190 yds. of 2 ply! My goal is to spin sock yarn but I’m BAFFLED as to how people turn 4 oz. of fiber into about 400 yds of yarn!! Must keep practicing.

Not sure I’ll do this on my blog as not many things would be in bold but I am going to use it as a reference for things to do in the future!

Wow! That list is huge. Like Margene I would have very few bold items. Actually, there are quite a few on thislist that I have absolutely no clue about. Clearly I have a lot of work to do.

Well now I’m sad because the knitting one, I could honestly say I had done quite a few of the things ont he list, a lot actually for my short time as a knitter. But the spinning, oh how sad, I’ve done so very little. I really need to buy out some spinning time. Just me and my wheel. Hmmm. Maybe I’ll take it outside with me tonight, no it’s too windy, but maybe Friday.

I did the Knitting Meme yesterday…perhaps I will do the spinning….I like that one. I am more proud of all the spinning related things I have dabbled in and accomplished. I, too, haven’t been knitting or spinning very long-guess we are just awesome for having accomplished so much in so little time!

Wow, you are right, you have covered a lot of ground in a very short time… inspiring. I might consider doing this list, but it certainly will be no match to yours.
