The Frosty Farm

Farm Sights

My last full day in Minnesota had a spectacular display of hoarfrost! So my sister took the day off and we went on a photo walk around the farm and some other places in the area. The cemetery images I shared before were from that day. Today I thought I’d share some of the sights from around the farm. You got to see the farm in early summer, why not see it in mid-winter as well?

Farm Sights

Farm Sights

What’s a dairy farm without some cattle? These are heifers (as are the above in the barbed wire shot) that are on a different farm sight from the main milking barn and the house I grew up in. When we first arrived they really kept back, but the longer I stood by the fence taking pictures the closey they crept. But, they always stayed in a line like that as they advanced.

Road Sign Farm Sights

Road signs and fence posts are of course a common sight in the rural areas as well. They are prettier with a dusting of frost…

The above is what we always called the “west road” though it was nothing more than a field access from the main farm sight. This is the same as in The West Road photo I took last June.

Derelict Car

And since it was winter and all weeds were dead and covered by snow I got to take a closer look at the derelict car that is in the woods.

I have a few more shots I really like that I’ll perhaps share tomorrow as part of Eye Candy Friday. But, I also have a request…

My sister and I enjoyed ourselves so much last March when she came out to attend Nikon School in Denver. We were out and about at various locations taking photos together for the first time - the Denver Zoo, Rocky Mountain National Park etc. Then we did a photo day when I was home last summer and now even this winter we braved the below zero temps to take pictures. We have found it is a great way to spend time together. She’s a more trained photographer so it is a chance for the little sister to teach the bigger sister some things :-)

Because we’ve found it is an activity we both enjoy for Christmas this year we got ourselves a trip to Albuquerque. Amber has a conference to attend the first half of next week so we’ll be smack in the middle of town with no vehicle and only scraps of 1-2 hours to kill here and there. But the second half of the week we’ll be renting a vehicle and going abroad a bit. If you have any travel advice of places we must go see or where we should eat please, share them! I’ll have some time on my own in the first half of the week as well so if there are yarn stores or similar sorts of places that I can get to with public transport I’m all ears!

Gorgeous pictures! Um… I’ve not actually done much in Albuquerque, other than go to the place on the west side that has the petroglyphs. Oh, and there was an Old Town of some sort, I think. Hmm - there was a yarn shop, but I can’t remember details anymore.

If you could take a side trip to Sante Fe, I’d recommend that - Taos might be to far?

Lovely photography — sharp and icy images of frost!

Amazing how it makes things (even the derelict car and barbed wire) look beautiful!

OH my goodness I love the cow pictures. Growing up my dad’s boss was also a dairy farmer, so I spent much time on a dairy farm getting milk, etc. I loved the cows. Still do.

Hi, I have a question about a pattern that I purchased from you, but I cannot find a “contact me” link on your site, could you send me an email and I’ll send the question. I’m pretty sure I have worked it out, but want to double check. thanks.

I have always been especially fond of heifers. I grew up with Holsteins (old-style, not the modern ones).

In Albuquerque, the yarn store that I know to visit is Village Wools. Worthwhile. It has a great history, and it’s a fine shop.

There are also many places to go in the area. We should get together with a map.
