I’m Screwed!

8/17/2005

Okay, so I procrastinated, but I just went to sit down and do some spinning for class tomorrow night and my wheel won’t work! The wheel is rubbing on the “handle”! What am I going to do? I have one bobbin of yarn appropriate for Navajo plying, but I need another and of course my wheel should be working to make it worth going to class tomorrow. Then there is of course the need to spin my three yarns fo different twists per inch as well (though that can be done tomorrow if I can get the wheel working).

Anyone familiar with the Suzies and can direct me to what might need adjusting to fix this? I haven’t been able to figure it out yet. I’ve sent an e-mail to the people I bought the wheel from who said to contact them if I ever have troubles. The last time I had squeaking troubles I called and they sort of implied it would be better to e-mail them. But, I’m kind of in a bit of time crunch. Especially since I don’t like to spin when DH is home to criticize and critique even though he’s never spun himself…

Help!

UPDATE: I got a phone call from the dealer and he said the problem indicates a bent fly wheel shaft. He said it usually happens when it is knocked over onto the fly wheel. However, that has never happened (unless DH has something to tell me). Just before I got the phone call I put the wheel up on the table we have in the basement AV room to have a more comfortable look at screws and such and when I unfolded it it no longer rubbed so I had been happily spinning for about 20 minutes when the call came in. I guess each time to fold and unfold the wheel it rotates the shaft slightly and in some positions the flywheel would rub and in others it won’t. So, with taking class and folding and unfolding it so often because of that I had hit that magic spot and when I popped it up on the table it had rotated enough that the fly wheel wasn’t rubbing any longer. There was some shipping damage to parts of my wheel when I bought it and Majacraft sent replacement parts. Given that information and the fact that the wheel hasn’t had any falls, the dealer is pretty sure the shaft was probably imperceptibly bent when he assembled it so there will be a new shaft coming from Majacraft in the next couple of weeks and he’ll be sending me a packet of diagrams and such showing me how to replace it. (Though I still haven’t replaced the other parts yet as I’m a bit chicken and those problems were just cosmetic and did not impact the functionality of the wheel, then I figured I might as well wait until I’m done lugging it around each week for class so now it’ll wait until the shaft arrives.)

  1. Quick! Go email Lizzy B from A Stitch in Time! Her blog is here: http://www.limpidity.org/index.php?/liz/index/
She has a wheel just like yours and I’m sure she’ll know exactly what to do.

  2. Hehehehe, Kristi, did you get my e-mail? Sounds like you did exactly what I suggested anyway, and it worked! I’m happy to hear it! Now you have my phone number though in case you ever need me for any more Susie questions! :)
