I Need Positive Needle Karma

10/13/2005

I do not know what sort of knitting sin I have performed, but it seems when it comes to knitting needles that I have been hexed.

I was using US 1 Swallow Caesin needles for my Flatiron socks. Yes, #2 is *still* on the needles, shut up! Somehow, the 5th one that wasn’t in the sock broke while in my knitting bag. Snap, right in half! Now, yes it could be worse. It could have been one that was in the sock. However, this is the first project I’ve used the needles on. That isn’t a very good lifetime. And, at the time I discovered the broken needle it was the only project in my knitting bag so I still don’t understand how it broke. There were no heavy books in there or other projects for it to have snagged on or anything.

Then, because I’ve been on the search for the perfect DPNs, I picked up some US 1.5s of the Pony Pearls a while back. I’m finding the tips not as sharp as I’d like for working with sock yarn. However, when I was cussing while trying to use them I realize that one of the BRAND NEW needles has lost the tiniest bit of it’s tip so the already blunt needle is even more so plus rough. Then, another one in the set seems as though it has been chewed on in the middle or something. It catches on the yarn ALL THE TIME! Grrr! It’s almost as if someone had their cat play with them and then returned them to the store. However, I did not buy these locally so I’m stuck with a set of 3 DPNs. Good for nothing but flat knitting and i-cords :-(

Then not in the damanged needle category but still in the bad needle category there is the issue of the Bryspun circulars. The cord is nice and supple and I of course love the pointy tips, but that join is too abrupt of a circumference change. It *might* be okay if you were knitting with the usual yarn for that size needle, but they are useless for lace weight, which is so sad making since the tips almost seem designed for lace.

So, if you have a candle for good knitting needle karma, please light it for me! I’m tired of having faulty needles :-(
