Carving 101

Additional Tips

  • Remember you are working with sharp tools when carving - only do so when you are alert.
  • A turntable is useful in place of the scrap paper. You can purchase the turn mechanisms in various sizes at a hardware store and make your own.
  • With caution and practice, you may wish to hold the carving material in your hand.
  • A terrycloth towel collects the shavings well so you can carve in places other than in your art work space.
  • A cigar box makes a wonderful container for a travel carving kit.
  • Magnifying glasses are very useful when carving small details, like eyes in portraits.
  • There are a multitude of things you can use to create texture - seamstress wheels, pins, brass rods etc. The only limit is your imagination.
