Another Contest…

4/11/2006

What is casting this shadow?

Since it is my birthday this week, I decided I’d have another contest this week. Do you know what is casting this shadow? If you do, post your guess in the comments and your name will go in a drawing to win your choice of one of my sock patterns. All guesses will be entered into the drawing! The drawing will be held Thursday morning. My mom will draw the winning name.

Last night was had SnB once again. It was a pretty good night. Cathy joined us and had her Jacob/German Shepherd yarn with her. I thought it felt pretty soft, but the dog was shedding everywhere. Occassionally I’d look over in her direction and there would a cloud of dog fur drifting through the air, LOL! She also brought me some fiber samples for my birthday! Many of them I haven’t tried before so I’m quite excited to give them a try. Thank you sooooo much, Cathy!

It never fails to amaze me the effect one person can have on the dynamic of a group. One person can make the group awkward and full of long stretches of silence and then suddenly as soon as that person leaves the group perks up and returns to their normal jovial and joking selves. It’s truly amazing! I’m so glad that Cathy got to experience our usual group dynamic for at least part of the evening.

I also cannot understand the purpose of coming to a SnB gathering if you are going to play computer games or read a book. Those are not social activities. What is the point? It seems to me if you feel like doing things other than knitting/crochet that perhaps you shouldn’t come to a SnB group. I have my Mondays where I’m not quite in the mood to knit or I don’t have an appropriate project on the needles for knitting in a public area with lively discussion, but I want to get out of the house and visit with my friends. But I sit there and take an active role in the discussion and sometimes I’m flipping through pattern books or doing something at least remotely related to knitting. I’m also close friends with the majority of the SnB gal regulars - we do things outside of the usual Monday night gatherings and occassionally we do couple things as well. So it really is visiting with good friends who really know me and with whom I have things in common. It isn’t a group of people who have nothing in common with me other than knitting.

Enough ranting from me, it is probably back to house cleaning for me… Mom arrives in T-40 hours or so…

  1. Hi Kristi - I need to introduce myself. I’m a friend of Snow’s and I’ll be joining you guys at Estes Park. Just wanted you to know I’ve been reading your blog to get to know you in advance. I’ve heard about your SnB woas from Snow and I know you guys are really frustrated with this situation. I hope she’ll stop coming, eventually!

  4. A spinning wheel. And it’s spinning really fast, isn’t it? I guess the girl that Snow keeps writing about is still lurking, huh? Hang in there.

  6. Gee, I wish I hadn’t missed SnB last night since I’d love to see Cathy again.

I’m grateful not to be the only one complaining about IG in public. Heehee. I need details!

  9. Gotta be a spinning wheel!

  10. I know it’s probably a wheel, but that’s as far as my knowledge extends. How about if I throw in some spinning-related words? Maiden! Throat! Tension! Ply!

Whoo. And as far as your group goes, you all haven’t managed to figure out how to confront the non-knitting member yet, huh? Sounds discouraging. I just can’t believe someone could sit by a group and not get sucked into the knitting vortex, myself. Hang in there!

  11. Suzie Pro lurks in the shadows.

I left early last night…I’m not the offensive member amy I? Ha, just kidding. It was a really fun group last night. I was sorry I had to head out for dinner.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

  13. Well, as I told Kristi, I couldn’t believe how much doghair separated from the Jacob. It was fun meeting everyone - what a fun group. IG did read and she did leave early but the group was polite with her - I was impressed how nice they all were when she was around and how “normal” they were once she was gone. Will put this on my schedule!

  14. It’s definitely a wheel, but I’m a non-spinner and have to stop there.

I’ve had that experience with knitting meet-ups too. I’ve been to groups where the people click, and where they don’t. If I feel comfortable and fit in, I go back. Otherwise, I don’t keep going. Strange that someone is oblivious to your group dynamic…

  15. Spinning wheel!

We have some people that manage to bring down our knitting group - but no one would ever jsut sit and play video games! Augh.

  16. Hmmm, I’m differing from the crowd here. I think it’s a niddy noddy and one of those CD Spindles from Spin-Off that I was using to spin a little of those sample fibers…

    And Happy Birthday!

  17. What go-es up must co-me down… ;)

I will also be at Estes Park this year, and, in fact, will be taking a little vacation in the Greater Snowballville metropolitan area. If you’d like, I can show up with long pointless anecdotes about how New York is nothing like Colorado, and how I thought everything would be bigger, and how I could never live in a town where you can’t buy arugula at 3 in the morning, all accompanied by frequent bubblegum cracking. If that doesn’t shake out the room, nothing will. ;) (Of course, you may want to warn your pals, so that they know I’m not really like that. Really. I’m not. [nervous laughter])

  21. I’m guessing “A Spinning Wheel” - I hope you don’t want maker or model number, ’cause then I’d be stuffed! :)

  22. It doesn’t look like a wheel to me. But what do I know about spinning!? So I’m going with a spindle and some roving hanging off your arm. ;-)

    Comment by margene — 4/11/2006 @ 12:25 pm

  23. Oh, dear - IG at her most annoying… Bummer!

Um, I’m guessing a spinning wheel is casting that shadow.

    Comment by Chris — 4/11/2006 @ 12:39 pm

  24. Well I know it’s a spinning wheel, looks like a traditional styled wheel, with possibly a distaff. Okay, no, no distaff, hmmm. Oh wait, it’s not a Kick Wheel is it. I saw the coolest Kick Wheel at the fiber fair I went to, I really wanted it, but didn’t want to spend $85.00.

Hmm, I think you guys need to change the location of your SnB and not tell a certain person.

  28. Have fun with your Mom. Can the shadow be a spinning wheel? I hope you don’t want the brand name I wouldn’t have a clue LOL.

  29. I of course am guessing: spinning wheel! And happy birthday to you, as well!

  31. I’m guessing the lower part of the spinning wheel, and it’s an Ashford Traditional.

    Am I even close? LOL

  32. My guess was a spinning wheel too! :D

    Comment by Christine — 4/12/2006 @ 5:24 pm

  33. I’m going with spinning wheel, too. Let me admit I just read that in the other comments, but I’m shameless. I’d really like one of your patterns-I have several, just finished the Flatiron, and I *love* them. Keep up the great work!
