The Sun Has Come Out!

7/6/2005

We will not be traveling back to IA for the funeral. DH says grandma would want us to have dessert and smile, not be all weepy. And, I have to say he’s quite right… Thank you to everyone for your words of support. I have passed it along to DH and his sister who lives here in town.

Now, onto the topic of the post…

Okay, so I happen to be blessed (though sometimes in the summer I feel cursed) to live in any area that generally only has 30-40 totally overcast days each year. However, the sun is shining in my basement right now…

Remember the photo of using the mini clamp yesterday? Well, I didn’t say much about what was being spun there. Let’s take a closer look…

You can’t see it real well here and I should have taken a photo sooner, but you can see that these singles will be progressing from an orange to a yellow. Both rovings had spots of the other color in them, but to make the transition smoother, I draft both together when I had about 18 inches or so of predrafted orange left. So, the color transition should be a bit smoother. Though I didn’t take into account the Navajo plying when I did it so it probably won’t appear as a very smooth transition when knit. But, I was happy with how well it worked to draft from both slivers at the same time when I took the time to properly prepare the fibers.

I’m also quite pleased with the thiness I’m able to achieve. I think I’m slowly increase the speed at which I can draft evenly, but to try reduce the overtwist I was getting I decided to go for a finer single. I have to say that the overtwist is much less! And, part of me wants to resist the Navajo plying for the moment use this as a single to knit a lace scarf for my SIL3 who is a HUGE fan of yellows and oranges. But, then part of me things about what a bargain this fiber was, which kinds of lessens the pressure to have a really good ply, which makes it tempting to go ahead and ply it. But, then again, if I didn’t ply it then the color transitions when knit would be smoother. Sometimes I really such at decisions!
